Project Innovation

Main feature slab

As the main property feature we envisioned something that would be a wow factor that very few other homes, if any, would have the same concept. Welcome to the 10 foot high by 5 foot wide full size Quartz slab with backlit lighting that during the day shines through the veins, and by night the whole slab lights up leaving everyone astounded. The idea came whilst touring the slab company and a sample of the Quartz was on display. After inquiring about the slab and learning about its translucent capabilities we knew this would be the perfect feature wall. The challenge was how to incorporate the idea into the home. We worked together with our various crews to brainstorm how to best transport and install a 10 foot high slab, as well as making sure the lighting is evenly spread throughout the piece. Unlike Onyx that is very translucent and any light easily shines through, Quartz is not as translucent and requires many hours of research to see what light setup would work best to see it lit up clearly during the day and have the light evenly spread out. Once we had the lighting strategy resolved the next obstacle was how to include heat vents within the structure that was going to hold the lights and slab. Light creates heat, and over time the heat could degrade the light fixtures which would reduce their service life. To address this we added heat circulation to ensure maximum life of the lighting fixtures. Unlike other builders in the Greater Vancouver area, at Plus Living we go above and beyond and are willing to exhaust every resource to make ideas come to life.

The Arch

Walking through other builders’ homes we often come across simple details that are missed such as the space separating between two areas (hallway and kitchen). The design of the home utilized white acrylic and rift white oak. To tie things together we were able to source pure white oak planks to use for the arch. Once installed by our finishing carpenter, we used a natural stain for the white oak to best keep the original finish and pull everything together with the other areas of the house using the same white oak concept. As you can see in the photo, that overlooked detail by other builders which we sought to address has added a huge bonus to the space, as well as an awesome design feature.

Kitchen Space

One of the main questions during planning was whether we follow every other home and include a separate dining room, or take a chance and remove it to have that additional space allocated to the kitchen and entertainment spaces. After living in a home with a dining room that was never used, and with talking to others for their input, we concluded that it was worth a gamble to not have a separate dining room. By removing the separate dining room we were able to enlarge the kitchen and spice kitchen as well as the entertainment/family space. This was the first project where we decided to exclude a dining room, so the feedback was uncertain for when the home was ready to be put up for sale on the market. Once up for sale we realized it was what a lot of clients actually preferred, and heard raves about the huge spice kitchen size that we were able to incorporate. Sometimes taking a different approach is worth the risk. Many clients have great ideas but they get tossed under the rug by their builder. For us at Plus Living we thrive on taking your ideas and making them a reality!
